Smart Glass Bathroom, Hermosa Beach — Oceanfront Privacy on a Remote
Project Overview
This smart glass bathroom in Hermosa Beach sits on the top floor of an oceanfront home, wrapped floor to ceiling in book-matched white marble with a freestanding soaking tub set right beneath the window. The owners wanted the one thing a great ocean view makes hard: real privacy, on demand, without hanging a blind or a curtain over the best part of the room. Smart View applied switchable smart film to the home's existing casement windows, so the glass turns from crystal clear to solid frosted at the press of a remote.
Inside the Hermosa Beach Build
- ~8 sq ft of switchable smart film, cut to the two casement sashes
- Applied to the existing glass — no new windows, no demolition of the stone surround
- Clear-to-frosted control on a handheld remote — no wall switch cut into the marble
- Even, milky-white frost across the full pane for complete privacy
- Windows still crank open — the casements stay fully operable for airflow
- Finish chosen for a wet, high-humidity oceanfront bath

The Problem: Privacy Without Losing the Ocean
An oceanfront bathroom has a built-in conflict. The same window that frames the Pacific also faces the neighbors' rooftops and the street just below, so the room is most exposed at exactly the moments you want it private. The usual answers make it worse: blinds and curtains trap steam in a wet marble bath, collect mildew, clutter a clean architectural line, and cover the view you paid for.
That is the gap a smart glass bathroom in Hermosa Beach is built to close. The fix is smart film — a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the existing glass. With power on, the crystals line up and the pane is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost you can't see through. There's no fabric to hold moisture, nothing to wipe down, and nothing hanging in front of the ocean. The window stays a window — it still opens — it just gains an on/off privacy setting.
On a Remote, Every Day
Day to day the glass lives clear, and the room keeps its full sightline to the water. When it's time for a bath or a shower, one tap on the remote frosts both casement sashes at once — instant privacy, then clear again when you're done. Because the control is a handheld remote, nothing had to be routed through the marble, and the switch is as simple as a light. It's the same on-demand privacy we built into a smart glass shower in Torrance, scaled up here for a marble master bath with a view worth protecting.
Working with Smart View
Every Smart View project starts with a measurement and a written proposal, so you see the smart glass cost before anything is ordered — a small run of film like this bathroom starts modestly and scales with the glass area, so the number always fits the actual job. If you have an oceanfront bath, a street-facing window, or any room where you want the view and the privacy, we can retrofit switchable film onto the glass you already have.
