Smart Film Installation

Switchable smart film looks simple to put on — until a single trapped bubble, speck of dust, or lifted edge turns into a permanent flaw. A clear, bubble-free result takes a trained crew that does this every day. That's us — installed across Southern California by our own trained crew.

The Smart View crew on ladders applying switchable smart film onto a large glass partition

Smart film turns the glass you already have into switchable privacy glass — clear when powered, frosted and private when off, in under a quarter second. The film is the easy part. Getting it on perfectly is the hard part — and it's the whole job.

Harder than it looks

Smart film is unforgiving

Switchable film isn’t a sticker. It’s a precision-cut PDLC laminate with conductive layers and busbars that carry the switching current. It has to bond perfectly flat to the glass — no trapped air, no dust, no stretch — then wire to a low-voltage supply.

Get any of it wrong and the flaw is permanent. You can’t push a bubble out of switchable film the way you might with basic window tint — a single speck of dust or pocket of air is locked in for good.

What goes wrong

This is what an untrained install looks like

These aren’t worst-case horror stories — they’re typical first-attempt results. We get the calls to come fix jobs exactly like these.

Smart film covered in trapped air bubbles from a botched DIY installation
Bubbles Trapped air across the whole panel — permanent once the film sets.
Smart film lifting and wrinkling at the edge from poor prep and an imprecise cut
Lifting edge A peeling, wrinkled edge — bad surface prep and an imprecise cut.

Trapped bubbles

Air pockets that can never be squeezed out once the adhesive grabs.

Dust under the film

One speck locked beneath the surface shows as a permanent dot.

Creases & wrinkles

Mishandled film folds on itself — and switchable film won’t recover.

Bad cut & misalignment

Cut short or crooked, and you’ve wasted an expensive custom panel.

Dead or cloudy zones

Damage the conductive layer or busbar and areas never switch right.

Wiring faults

It’s 60V AC. Wrong connections mean flicker, no switch, or a blown transformer.

How we do it

How we get a flawless, bubble-free finish

A perfect install is mostly preparation and experience. Here’s the process behind every Smart View job:

1

Measure & survey

Every pane measured to the millimeter, and the power and control path mapped before we cut anything.

2

Cut & switch-tested at our facility

Each panel is cut to your exact glass and powered-on and tested before it ever reaches you — busbars factory-applied.

3

Dust-managed surface prep

The glass is cleaned and prepped in a controlled way. Dust is the enemy of a clean bond, so this step is everything.

4

Precise application

The film is positioned and squeegeed dead flat — zero trapped air, zero stretch, edges sealed clean.

5

Concealed wiring & calibration

Low-voltage wiring runs to a hidden transformer, then we verify switching, clarity, and your controls.

Our promise

Backed by a flawless-finish guarantee

Every Smart View installation carries our workmanship guarantee: if a panel we install bubbles, hazes, lifts, or won’t switch because of our workmanship, we make it right — no charge. You get a flawless, bubble-free result, or we fix it.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can I install smart film myself?
We don't recommend it. Switchable PDLC film is far less forgiving than ordinary window tint — trapped bubbles, dust under the film, an imprecise cut, or a wiring mistake are permanent and very common on a first attempt, and a creased film can't be re-applied. That's why we install with our own trained crew across LA, and supply material-only film orders to licensed contractors and trade installers rather than for DIY.
How do you stop bubbles and dust getting trapped?
It comes down to preparation and experience: each panel is cut and switch-tested at our facility, the glass is cleaned and prepped in a dust-controlled way, and the film is squeegeed dead flat with zero trapped air. Every install is also backed by our workmanship guarantee.
Do I have to replace my windows?
No. Smart film is applied to the interior surface of your existing glass — no demolition, no frame changes — and it can be professionally removed later without damaging the glass.
How long does smart film installation take?
Most homes (three to five windows) are done in a single day. Larger homes take one to three days, and commercial projects one to two weeks depending on scope. Every panel is cut and switch-tested before install day.
Where do you install?
Our crew installs across the Los Angeles metro, and we travel for larger residential and commercial projects throughout Southern California — including San Diego, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and the Bay Area. Outside that range, we custom-cut and supply smart film per project to your local licensed installer.
Can it be controlled by a switch, app, or voice?
Yes. We set up wall-switch, remote, app, and voice control, and integrate with Lutron, Savant, Crestron, Control4, Alexa, and Google Home.
