Smart Glass for Windows

Smart glass for windows means the whole window switches — not a film added on top. Laminated, insulated glass units that go in as replacements or in new construction, clear for the view and frosted for privacy on demand.

A wall of switchable smart glass windows, clear and showing the view

"Smart glass for windows" can mean two different things, and the difference matters for your project. This page is about the first one: the window itself being switchable glass. (If you want to switch windows you already have, that's smart film instead.)

Switchable glass, fabricated as a real window

Smart glass for windows is a complete laminated glass unit with a PDLC switchable layer sealed inside. Power it on and it's clear for the view; power it off and it's evenly frosted for privacy — in under a second, with no blinds, curtains, or moving parts. Because it's built as glass, it replaces a window one-for-one rather than sitting on top of one. Here's how the switching works.

Replacement or new construction

  • Replacement windows. We measure your existing openings and fabricate switchable units to match, so you swap a plain window for a smart one without changing the wall.
  • New construction & remodels. Working from your drawings and window schedule, we plan the glass and its concealed low-voltage wiring into the design from the start — the cleanest possible result.

Residential and commercial

The same approach covers a bathroom or street-facing window at home and a full elevation of conference-room or storefront glass for a commercial building. For exterior openings we build the switchable layer into an insulated, laminated unit so it performs as a genuine window. For models with certified thermal numbers, see our smart glass picture windows.

Frequently asked questions

Can smart glass replace my existing windows?
Yes. We fabricate switchable smart glass as a complete laminated glass unit sized to your opening, so it goes in as a like-for-like window replacement. If you'd rather keep the windows you have, the alternative is retrofitting switchable smart film onto the existing glass instead.
Is smart glass for windows suitable for new construction?
Absolutely — new builds and remodels are an ideal fit, because the smart glass unit and its low-voltage wiring can be planned into the opening and the wall from the start. We work from architect drawings and window schedules.
Is it insulated / double-glazed for exterior windows?
For exterior openings we build the switchable layer into a laminated, insulated glass unit (IGU) so it performs as a real window — not just a privacy panel. For certified thermal specs, see our NFRC-rated picture-window models.
What's the difference between smart glass windows and smart film?
Smart glass is the entire window unit switching, fabricated and installed as glass. Smart film is a switchable layer applied to glass you already own. New windows or a full remodel lean toward smart glass; keeping existing windows leans toward film. We'll tell you which fits your project.
How much do smart glass windows cost?
It scales with size and quantity. A small window starts around $1,500 and goes up from there with area, number of openings, and whether it's a replacement or new-construction install. Send your sizes for a written estimate.
